Land Use Planning

The Michikan Lands and Resources first goal was to establish a community based land use plan to determine the most appropriate use of the land, deciding which lands to dedicate for protection and which to remain open to resource development. This required mapping traditional lands that our people have inhabited before and after European contact. Elders were interviewed who passed on knowledge, stories and history of the land. This information is available for the people and also for our future generations to use in their pursuit for economic and social activities.

Economic Development

• Create an economic base plan to ensure economic independence to promote business opportunities and entrepreneurship for its members.

Transportation – All Weather Road (at beginning stages)

• The proposed gravel road will cross over Severn River and join with the Musselwhite Mines road from Pickle lake.
• Limit the high costs of freight, cheaper gas, etc.
• Global warming shortening the winter road season.
• BLFN will establish their own trucking companies.

Environmental Protection

• To prevent environmental harm and to be protected from resource and industrial developments.
• To live and celebrate in our God given lands and to be able to enjoy our traditional way of life.

Mining

• Partnerships with junior mining companies and other First Nations communities.
• A resource that our community can tap into for economic stability.
• Training for our people.
• Revenue goes to the community.
