History

The name of the area that the Anishnewac first came together to trade, socialized and celebrate was called Bearskin Lake. The Hudson Bay company had established a trading post here and also a post office. In the summer of 1932 furious forest fires threatened the north western region of Ontario and this would also force the Anishnewac to move east and settle at Michikan Lake some 30 air miles away. The name Michikan is “fish trap” because the people who inhabited this region would block off certain areas of the Michikan River to lure fish into shallow areas and spear or scoop them up for food. The name of the lake they travelled from stuck as the post office could only ship mail to an address at Bearskin Lake.

Despite being a small population, Bearskin Lake First Nation (BLFN) strives to be a competitor in the new world of economics and development. The Michikan Lands and Resources office (MLR) plan and carry out projects that will enhance the infrastructure and economic benefits for its community and community members. MLR is directed by the BLFN Chief and Council and are chaired by a steering committee formed by local people. MLR is in the process of establishing various projects for its community which can benefit its people in economical ventures. This would see the community become self-sufficient and not rely on government support and hand-outs.
